Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Heavy rain falls past the roofline and gutter of a red brick house, with wind-blown leafy trees against a pale grey sky behind it.

A contractor called out to repair a mini-split in Putnam County has to work out what actually caused the failure, and the weather record here makes that harder to shortcut. 197 severe weather events were recorded in Putnam County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, outdoor coils, line sets, and condensate systems have been running against real load, and a good diagnosis accounts for that before settling on a part. A unit that throws a fault code after a rough season may have a worn contactor or a refrigerant issue that predates it entirely, and the repair scope follows from which it is.

The refrigerant lines and wiring behind a mini-split in this county often belong to an earlier system entirely, installed when the house was younger and the equipment was different. Half the homes in Putnam County, West Virginia were built in 1989 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor opening a unit here checks what type and charge the existing lines were sized for, because a system adapted from older infrastructure does not always match the spec the replacement part assumes. If the part ordered does not match what the lines or connections actually are, the repair stops until it does.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks First

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house with a shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall and is the piece a homeowner sees every day. Its fan, coil, and filter are all working parts, and when any one of them fails, the unit may blow warm air, cycle on and off without cooling or heating the room, or stop responding to the remote altogether.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the second coil. A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small hole in the wall, carrying the charge that makes the whole system work. The condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, and a blocked drain is one of the first things a contractor checks when the indoor unit is leaking.

The drawing shows a typical mini-split layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific installation.
