Rain falls past the gabled roofline and gutter of a red brick house while wind bends a leafy tree behind it against an overcast sky.

A contractor sizing or replacing a mini-split in Mingo County has to settle one question before anything else: what actually drove the failure or the inefficiency. 85 severe weather events were recorded in Mingo County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional fact of life here, not a sustained operating load, so the outdoor unit on a system that is underperforming has probably been undone by a poor original install, undersizing, or years of deferred maintenance rather than by climate stress. A contractor who can tell the difference between those causes will quote a very different job than one who cannot.

Older wiring and panels built for the loads of another era are what a contractor runs into in a significant share of Mingo County houses. Half the homes in Mingo County, West Virginia were built in 1982 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A mini-split draws power differently from what most of that stock was wired to support, and whether the existing service can handle it is a question the contractor has to settle before the unit, the line set, or the mounting position enters the conversation. If the panel falls short, that work gets added to the scope.

The Mini-split Parts That Get Installed in Your Home

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small gray house showing two rooms, one with a sofa and one with a bed, each with a wall-mounted indoor air conditioning unit connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It pulls room air across its coil and pushes treated air back into the space. Outside, the compressor unit sits on the ground or a wall bracket and handles the mechanical work that makes the whole system run.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying the working fluid between them. A condensate drain line runs alongside it to move moisture out of the house. A dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit directly.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your specific home.
